Shopping

Madrid is a shopping town with a varied character. What immediately is catching the eye, are the many small shops which are located in the residential blocks of each district. There is hardly a house without a small shop on the ground floor. Who moves in the city center, first encounters inevitably on the Gran Vía with its numerous shops in various price ranges. Numerous international and national brands have their offices here. South of Madrid's main avenue you can find more numerous smaller and larger stores. In addition to several branches of the department store chain El Corte Inglés, the many shoe shops stand out in particular. An entirely different picture presents in the north of Gran Vía in the Calle Fuencarral or in the Chueca district. Here you can find even some branches of renowned international brands, but the public is a completely different. Attracted by these numerous fancy and trendy shops that one would otherwise expect more in London, New York or Berlin.

Twice a year there is a seasonal sale in Madrid. The winter sales begin in the second week of January and ends in late February. The summer clearance sale stretches from July to August.

The opening hours needs compared to other countries getting used to, since many businesses have their own individual opening hours. Some shops are open seven days a week, others only from Monday to Saturdays. It can be quite confusing on holidays, because then in turn the times can change. Thus, if you plan on weekends or holidays a shopping tour, you should inform in advance if the favourite boutique has opened for the scheduled time.
